PS5810-1 Curtiss JN-4 Jenny U.S. Air Mail service (1:100) The JN-4 "Jenny" was a single-engine, 2-seater biplane built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company as a training aircraft for the U.S. Army. It was widely used during World War I to train new pilots, but it saw a more significant role in aviation history as a mail-carrying airplane in the 1920s. The U.S. Army Air Corps transferred six JN-4H airplanes to the U.S. Post Office Department towards the end of WWI. These Jennys were first to be used on the regularly scheduled Air Mail Service, which operated on a route between Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York City. On May 15, 1918, airplane ?38262 piloted by Army Lt. George Boyle was the first airplane to fly U.S. mail, ushering in the Post Office's new Air Mail Service. President Woodrow Wilson and other officials were on hand to witness this historic event. The President handed his personal letter of greetings to a very young Army Air Service pilot at Potomac Park polo grounds in Washington, DC, to be flown to the Mayor of New York City, via a relay stopover at Philadelphia, PA.
